James Paine was born on 6 July 1665 in Eastham, Massachusetts.2 He was the son of Thomas Paine and Mary Snow.1 He "was admitted a townsman in 1689 at Barnstable where he was active as schoolteacher, miller, cooper, soldier and clerk. He served as military clerk in the 1691 expedition against Canada, and his heirs received therfor in 1736 a grant of land in Maine." He married Bethiah Thacher, daughter of John Thacher and Rebecca Winslow, on 9 April 1691 in Barnstable.2 He died on 12 November 1728 in Barnstable at age 63.2
