     Samuel Bassett was born on 7 September 1756 in Milford, New Haven County, Connecticut.1,2 He was the son of Samuel Bassett and Susannah Morris. He married Jerusha Hotchkiss, daughter of Benjamin Hotchkiss and Martha Brooks, on 30 October 1775 in Cheshire, Connecticut.3,4 He served during the Revolutionary War, first for three months starting on 1 January 1776 as a private in Captain Samuel Peck's Connecticut company.1 He then served six months beginning on 1 June 1776 as a private in Captain Samuel Peck's company of Colonel Douglas' Connecticut regiment, during which he was in the battle of Harlem.1 Lastly he enlisted on 1 April 1779 and served one year as a private in Captain Peter Hepburn's Connecticut company, during which he was stationed in Milford and guarded the adjacent coast.1 He appeared on the census of 1790 in Milford.5 He appeared on the census of 1800 in Milford.6 He appeared on the census of 1820 in New Haven.7 He died on 27 December 1836 in New Haven at age 80.8,9 He was buried in the Grove Street Cemetery, New Haven. The grave was noted to have a Revolutionary War marker.10
