     John Tilley was baptized on 19 December 1571 in Henlow, Bedfordshire, England.1 He was the son of Robert Tilley and Elizabeth Ellenbourne.1 He married Joan Hurst Rogers, daughter of Williams Hurst and Rose Marshe Rushe, on 20 September 1596 in Henlow.2 He and Joan Hurst Rogers immigrated aboard the Mayflower in 1620 to Plymouth Colony. In 1620 John Tilley was the sixteenth signer of the Mayflower Compact and a member of the exploring expedition of the Cape Cod area. He was also a member of the expedition later to be known as the "First Encounter."1,3 He died during the first winter in 1621 in Plymouth Colony. He was buried in 1621 in Coles Hill Burial Ground, Plymouth.4,5
